Here is a method to measure the wavelength of our signal. Here are two identical sine waves of equal magnitude and frequency (or equal wavelength) passing each other in the same space. Observe the vertical green lines very carefully. The strength of the resulting field at these green points is always zero.

 

The lower diagram represents the resulting field strength as indicated on our moving-coil-with-diode wavemeter at various points in space. Note the maximum and the zero points!

 

The zero points are sharp to measure and are half a wavelength apart!
